Jupiter 8 1:2.0/50mm; 1/500 sec @ f/2.4

Spring has been cold and wet last week, but 10 days ago I was lucky to find a sunny Sunday morning when I visited the national park Kampina. I have posted about this park before (here and here), but it’s been over a year and it’s a beautiful and versatile area. I walked across a woodland with fresh green leaves before finding a wide open area of heather fields with pools. As my Summilux lens was at the repair shop I brought the Jupiter who gets overlooked a lot since I own the Summilux, but it seems to delivers too.

The woodland part:

Summicron 1:2.0/35mm ASPH; 1/2000 sec @ f/2.0
Summicron 1:2.0/35mm ASPH; 1/2000 sec @ f/2.0

Hear you can clearly see the different characters of the modern Summicron and the old Jupiter 8:

Jupiter 8 1:2.0/50mm; 1/350 sec @ f/3.4
Jupiter 8 1:2.0/50mm; 1/350 sec @ f/3.4
Summicron 1:2.0/35mm ASPH; 1/250 sec @ f/2.0
Summicron 1:2.0/35mm ASPH; 1/250 sec @ f/2.0
Jupiter 8 1:2.0/50mm; 1/45 sec @ f/16
Jupiter 8 1:2.0/50mm; 1/45 sec @ f/16
Jupiter 8 1:2.0/50mm; 1/350 sec @ f/2.8
Jupiter 8 1:2.0/50mm; 1/350 sec @ f/2.8

It’s amazing how much of a difference in light there is when you reach the open area. The eyes adjust easily, but the exposures are really different. Since I started with film photography I am much more aware of that…

Summicron 1:2.0/35mm ASPH; 1/350 sec @ f/9.5
Summicron 1:2.0/35mm ASPH; 1/350 sec @ f/9.5
Summicron 1:2.0/35mm ASPH; 1/250 sec @ f/9.5
Summicron 1:2.0/35mm ASPH; 1/250 sec @ f/9.5
Jupiter 8 1:2.0/50mm; 1/1000 sec @ f/6.8
Jupiter 8 1:2.0/50mm; 1/1000 sec @ f/6.8
Summicron 1:2.0/35mm ASPH; 1/250 sec @ f/9.5
Summicron 1:2.0/35mm ASPH; 1/250 sec @ f/9.5 (Panorama from 2 images)

Of course I had to go as far as I can with shooting against the sun. You lose color by doing so, but I love the effect. This time I deliberately exposed to get the details in the tree, and therefore blowing out the highlighted sky.

Summicron 1:2.0/35mm ASPH; 1/60 sec @ f/16
Summicron 1:2.0/35mm ASPH; 1/60 sec @ f/16
Summicron 1:2.0/35mm ASPH; 1/250 sec @ f/8.0
Summicron 1:2.0/35mm ASPH; 1/250 sec @ f/8.0 (Panorama from 4 images)
Summicron 1:2.0/35mm ASPH; 1/125 sec @ f/8.0
Summicron 1:2.0/35mm ASPH; 1/125 sec @ f/8.0
Jupiter 8 1:2.0/50mm; 1/1500 sec @ f/2.8
Jupiter 8 1:2.0/50mm; 1/1500 sec @ f/2.8

Finishing with another photo from the woods, as the flare that I got in this situation was spectacular. I don’t know if I could recreate it again, it was a lucky shot 🙂

  1. I really like the two images with the trails that lead through the trees. Film really does make you more aware. I shoot my DSLR differently since I started shooting film.

    1. Thanks Urban. I should use the jupiter more often, but since I have 2 rangefinders now that may actually happen!
