Two weeks ago we paid a short (only three days!) visit to our favourite Greek island Karpathos. We have been there before, and apart from the sun, beautiful landscape and snorkelling, a big reason for us to go back is The Four Seasons. We found this very nice restaurant, run by four brothers, with absolutely great food in Amoopi (or Ammopi). As you might be able to read on the sign below, they put pizza first on their list, but we go there for the Greek dishes, and their home-made bread.
We mostly enjoy eating a variety of starters that we share. I always get very gleeful and even a bit giddy when our table gets filled with small plates and platters with different kind of food. One of the things that always ends up on our table is the bread. It is really delicious, served still warm with garlic butter and olive-tapenade. Of course the Greek salad or choriatiki is another no-brainer.
Below two more favourites: the baked feta with honey and sesame, and in front the karpathian keftedes. My man has been practising all year to replicate the keftedes (dough balls filled with vegetables and feta), and he has gotten pretty close. But the real deal is still unbeaten!
Of course the setting helps too. Eating keftedes at home on a rainy sunday morning is different from eating it at 30 degrees looking over the Aegean Sea…
The Four Seasons has their dinner room at the top floor, so a good view is guaranteed. However sometimes the wind-shields have to be lowered as the food would be blown away from the tables. Below the owner and the waitress are putting the screens up again, just in time for me to take some pictures with an unrestricted clear view 🙂 .
The view from the dinner area includes a field with olive trees, as you can just about see in the photo below on the left. From this view I last year spotted the olive tree which lead to one of my favourite photos ever. So I had to repeat the same shot this year, but it turned out slightly different. The lady in our hotel told us that winter had been dry, and I guess the result is some rather sad-looking tree.
Tree photographed in summer 2015:
Same tree, same spot, summer 2016: a rather thinned tree, and the grass has been removed too!
At night the place gives a good view of the changing colors in the sky during sunset. And you can see that diner time is less quiet than lunch-hour:
Just one more time: choriatiki and bread:
Although you can’t taste the food, you might understand from the pictures why we visited this place 6 times during our three-day visit…
Thanks for reading, and Yiamas!
Wow, what a view! We have some authentic Greek restaurants nearby here in the states that my wife loves to frequent. Your pictures are making me hungry. Nice images!
Thanks Travis!
Love the images so clean. Did you use the Leica M2?
Thanks so much! Not the M2, these were all taken with the digital M240.
