Last fall I fell in love with the Lake District. I hadn’t visited it before, slightly being put off by the hype around the area. But the truth is that it is an incredibly beautiful part of the UK. So I decided that it would be nice to show my mother, who has never visited the UK, the Lake District in early spring.

My mother and I stayed in the same apartment as I did in october, in the north of the Lake District near the town Keswick. The view from the grounds of the apartment is incredible, even with a bit of rain, so it’s a good location to impress a parent:

The next few photos were made in the garden:

My mother’s favourite spot in the living room:

We took a road trip driving a circle from Keswick to Borrowdale, Buttermere and High Lorton. If you are ever in the area, I can highly recommend this route!

A short walk from the apartment I found a gate with access to the hill at the foot of Skiddaw mountain. On one quiet morning I had some great views while watching the sun rise:

You cannot visit the Lakes without being confronted with lakes, and to really embrace that we took a boat trip on Windermere:

Close to Windermere is Skelwith Bridge. Next to a lovely river there is also a cafe that serves excellent food, if you can get a table.

On the last morning the conditions were kind of ideal for photography: low fog in the valley, with clear skies. Unfortunately we had to leave early, so there was only time to make some photos from the apartment grounds:

I am sure I will come back to this place, as it is beautiful. If you want to see my photos from the Lake District in fall, visit my posts from last october here and here. I also did a post on the apartment we stayed in: The Conservatory.

  1. A lovely set of images. I particularly like the panoramas – some skilful ‘stitching’ going on here as the sky tones have blended in very well. The trees have a special character at this time of year before their skeletal outlines get clothed in leaves – you’ve captured that very well. If you liked the Lake District I can strongly recommend North Wales for your next trip over here !

  2. It took me a while to notice that you had not mentioned film, the images had a beauty which I do not associate with most digital.

Like Scotland, I think the Lakes benefit from a little rain, streams cascading down what had been dry bare hillsides makes them come alive and the colours gain a richness.

Spring was probably a good choice, it is a very long time since I made a proper visit because of the crowds. A few years ago I made a diversion through the Lakes on a journey north at the end of winter, it was a mixture of joy at the beauty of the land and the empty roads and sadness that I may never make a proper visit again. Your images have stirred that up again.

    1. Thanks for you comment. And it is quite crowded, one of the reasons that Scotland remains my favourite destination.
